Land Rover Discovery Review

The massive Land Rover Discovery has attractive angles, but the gigantic back overhang makes it appear awkward, and the offset number plate on the tailgate isn't for everyone. The cabin appeals to a broader audience. The dash is simply fashioned, and there isn't the same level of elegance as you would get in a Range Rover cabin, but everything looks and feels robust. The Discovery has an 'entry height' that eases ingress, and once restored to full height, and drivers get a captain's vision of the globe. The seating location in the center row isn't ideal, but the optional third row is entirely usable.

Performance

The 340hp, 3.0-liter supercharged petrol V6 engine in the Discovery is powerful but thirsty, while the 258hp, a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine, is powerful and refined. We have yet to test drive the Discovery with a 2.0-liter diesel engine, but at 241hp and 500Nm, it has some impressive numbers. At high speeds, the steering is excellent, and the suspension is supple, providing a perfect sense of control. However, the handling isn't sporty, and the ride is a little tight at low speeds. The Discovery was designed for heavy mud-plugging and is very capable in the mud.

Exterior

The new Land Rover Discovery exterior has a fresh, futuristic appearance, and when you look closely, you can tell that it's a significant update to the outgoing Discovery. The new LED headlamps seem futuristic and Range Rover-like, even though they retain their sleek style with a blocky-designed back and new LED tail lamps. The new 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels complement the glass roof's attitude. The size of the wheels is determined by the variant chosen.

The Land Rover Discovery, unlike the Audi Q7 and Mercedes GLE, does not attempt to resemble a high-riding saloon. Instead, its boxy shape, black plastic accents, and silver skid plates give it a robust, rugged appearance – albeit in a quiet, unobtrusive way.

Interior

Unlike the appearance, which remains substantially unchanged, the interior of the Land Rover Discovery has been renovated for its mid-life refresh. There are new trims and upholstery options and more comfortable rear seats. The primary difference is in technology, with Land Rover's latest infotainment system being faster to respond and more feature-packed than the previous model.

The larger interior of the Land Rover Discovery means it can transport more passengers than the competitors like Audi Q7. There's enough space for six passengers to stretch out in the front five seats, and there's just about enough room left over for adults in the far back – something that's not often the case in seven-seat SUVs.

Conclusion

The Land Rover Discovery is the most capable of its competitors, including the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Mercedes GLS, and BMW X5. It may not be the top performer in the competition, but it provides far more value than the money spent on it. The features offered are also one-of-a-kind. Although it appears smaller than the original Discovery, it is relatively similar in size. Although the engines may have been more powerful, these 3.0 L petrol and diesel engines are pretty impressive.
